The REFOWAS project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), investigates:

  • Food waste quantities in Germany
  • Reasons for the generation of food waste along the entire value chain
  • Assessment of environmental and economic impacts
  • Conduction of case studies in cooperation with stakeholders:
    • Fruit and vegetable production (agriculture)
    • Bakeries
    • School catering
    • Social-empirical study on the handling of food in private households
  • Derivation of options for action to avoid food waste
